Mannequins 101: Which Series Is Your Perfect Match?

February 09th, 2026

Meet the Pivot Point Mannequin Series: How to Choose the Right Hair Mannequin for Every Need

by Pivot Point Director of Product Experience, Jason Russell

Hair. Dolls. Mannequins.

Some people grow out of their childhood obsessions—I turned mine into a career.

As a kid, I was completely obsessed with hair and dolls. My collection didn’t just grow—it exploded into the hundreds. I spent hours organizing accessories, combing hair, and changing outfits. It wasn’t just playtime; it was a daily ritual—honestly, probably more essential to me than drinking water.

What I didn’t realize then was that this passion was quietly shaping my future.

Fast forward to adulthood, and not much has changed—except now, playing with hair and mannequins is my full-time job.

When I first entered hair school, I assumed mannequins were temporary—just practice tools. I figured once I graduated, I’d never touch another mannequin again.

Boy, was I wrong.

Why Mannequins Matter in Hair Education

Jason Russell Pivot Point Mannequin Expert

For the past 27 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of Pivot Point hair mannequins used in cosmetology education worldwide.

Early in my career, I became an educator at Pivot Point Academy, spending eight years teaching Phase One—the stage where students work exclusively on cosmetology training mannequins before ever touching a live client. That meant day in and day out… MANNEQUINS!

In 2011, my journey expanded globally when I became a Pivot Point Field Educator, traveling the world to educate educators. And guess what came with me everywhere?

Yep. More MANNEQUINS!

For the next 13 years, every workshop I delivered—cutting, coloring, styling, texture—was performed entirely on hairdressing mannequins. And today, in my role as Pivot Point Director of Product Experience, my focus is on understanding the manufacturing, specifications, performance, and innovation behind every Pivot Point mannequin series.

Who would’ve thought that a childhood love for hair and dolls would turn into such a rewarding, full-circle career?

Welcome to the Pivot Point Mannequin Series

Now, I’m taking that lifelong passion and paying it forward.

This blog series is designed to educate you on our full range of Pivot Point mannequin products and help you confidently choose the right mannequin for every learning, teaching, and creative need.

My hope is simple: that every mannequin you work with brings as much joy, inspiration, and possibility as my “babies” have brought me over the years.

Welcome to the world of mannequins—through the eyes of someone who’s loved them from the very beginning.

So… Which Hair Mannequin Should You Choose?

Mannequins 101: Pivot Point Practice Heads

Choices, choices, choices.

Everyone loves options—until there are too many great ones.

The mannequin that’s perfect for a bold color workshop might not be ideal for a precision cutting class. And what about long hair mannequins—can they really handle

Pixies, Bixies, and Bobs?

Great questions. And trust me—you’re not alone in asking them.

With so many hair types, textures, colors, and lengths available, choosing the right mannequin head for hair practice can feel overwhelming. That’s exactly why this series exists.

Over the next few blogs, we’ll break down the full range of Pivot Point mannequin hair products and guide you step by step to the best choice for your goals—whether you’re teaching, learning, or creating.

Let’s get this party started.

Understanding the Pivot Point Mannequin Series

Let’s start with the foundation: mannequin series.

At Pivot Point, every mannequin we offer falls into one of four distinct series. Each series is intentionally designed to support specific educational, technical, and creative needs.

No matter your goal, there’s a Pivot Point mannequin series built for it.

Original Series Hair Mannequins

Pivot Point Original Series Mannequins

The Original Series is where it all began.

These classic hair mannequins for cosmetology training feature a foam-like, rubbery face, neck, and head, with hair directly implanted into the scalp. Crafted from soft PVC, they closely mimic the look and feel of human skin for a realistic, hands-on experience.

Available in multiple head sizes with an extended neck (but no shoulders), this is the mannequin most people picture when they think of hair education.

Reliable. Familiar. Timeless.

Premium Series Hair Mannequins

Pivot Point Premium Series Mannequins

Meet the VIP of mannequins—or better yet, the VIM: Very Important Mannequin.

Like the Original Series, Premium Series mannequins are made from soft PVC and are available in multiple sizes. What sets them apart is their elevated realism: full shoulders, increased hair density, eyelashes, and uniquely engineered implantation patterns.

Designed specifically for OMC Hairworld, these advanced training mannequins deliver elite-level performance for high-level education and competition environments.

Cap Series Interchangeable Hair Mannequins

Pivot Point Cap Series Mannequins

For more than 20 years, the Cap Series has been all about flexibility, innovation, and sustainability.

Made from durable ABS plastic, these mannequins are reusable, recyclable, space-saving, and incredibly versatile. The Cap Series uses one reusable headform paired with nearly 50 interchangeable hair caps.

With options across multiple skin tones, lengths, colors, and textures, this series is ideal for educators seeking efficiency, diversity, and adaptability in cosmetology mannequin training.

Slip-On Series Hair Mannequins

Pivot Point Slip-On Series Mannequins

The Slip-On Series takes modular mannequin design one step further.

Like the Cap Series, it uses a reusable ABS plastic headform—but each Slip-On component covers the entire head, face, and neck. Made from soft PVC, it offers a realistic, skin-like feel similar to the Original Series while maintaining the space-saving benefits of interchangeable design.

Budget-friendly, recyclable, and brilliantly engineered, this series is the perfect balance of realism and convenience.

How to Choose the Right Hair Mannequin

Still deciding? Here’s a quick way to narrow it down:

  • Consider the service: cutting, coloring, styling, or texture
  • Decide between soft, skin-like realism or hard, recyclable plastic
  • Think about storage, sustainability, and budget
  • Choose features that support your learning or teaching goals

Here’s the best part: every Pivot Point mannequin series does it all.

Color. Cut. Perm. Relax. Style.

Each series offers mannequins in a variety of lengths, colors, and textures—so no matter the service, you’re covered.

And trust me…

It’s just getting good.

Stay tuned for Blog 2, where we dive deep into hair type, texture, length, and color—and help you choose like a true pro.

Professional Beauty Leaders Unite to Build a Shared Data Foundation

February 02nd, 2026

2025 Beauty Industry Data Roundtable: Key Findings & Next Steps from the PBA Executive Summit

PBA Executive Summit Hosts First Cross-Functional Data Roundtable

The Beauty Changes Lives (BCL) Data Roundtable at the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) Executive Summit on November 18, 2025, brought together leaders from beauty schools, brands, manufacturers, software companies, associations, and media to address one of the industry’s most significant barriers to growth: the lack of consistent, reliable, and unified data.

This was the first coordinated effort to identify the true scope of the industry’s data challenges and outline a path forward. During the event, 11 roundtable discussions focused on different data-related topics, including workforce metrics, market segmentation, licensing standards, and operational benchmarks.

PBA Executive Director Leslie Perry and BCL President Lynelle Lynch welcomed attendees. The session was emceed by Edwin Neill, President of Neill Corporation and a BCL board member.

PBA Executive Summit Leslie Perry Professional Beauty Association

Challenges Facing Beauty Industry Data

No Shared Data Foundation

The industry currently lacks a standardized data foundation. Inconsistent definitions, coding, and terminology make it nearly impossible to compare datasets across organizations.

“We’re all going to have different definitions.”

We Don’t Know the Basic Numbers

Fundamental metrics such as the number of salons, active professionals, and independent operators are unclear or contradictory across existing datasets.

“We don’t have a true understanding of just what the market is.”

Major Market Segments Are Missing

Important segments of the industry remain largely uncounted. Independents, salon suites, the Vietnamese nail sector, cultural hair categories, and the gray market are often absent from official data.

“A blinding flash of the obvious… the consumer category isn’t here.”

Data Is Fragmented and Contradictory

Existing industry data is often conflicting and lacks consistent definitions or segmentation, making it difficult to use for analysis or planning.

“Any data considered respectable… lacks segmentation.”

Lynelle Lynch PBA Executive Summit

Weak Data Undermines Advocacy

Without credible and accessible data, the industry struggles to respond effectively to legislative and regulatory threats.

“We are slammed with legislation—and we don’t have the data to fight with.”

The Industry Must Control Its Narrative

When external groups define the story of professional beauty using incomplete data, it negatively impacts recruitment, retention, and credibility.

“Other people have always claimed the narrative for us.”

Strong Alignment and Willingness to Collaborate

Despite long-standing fragmentation, the roundtable demonstrated a strong desire for collaboration and alignment across the industry.

“We are more aligned than we realized.”

On-site research underscored the urgency, with 86% of attendees agreeing that collaboration around data is extremely important.

The KIM Report PBA Executive Summit Edwin Neil

Industry Goals for Unified Data Standards

Participants agreed on two primary goals to address the industry’s data challenges:

Goal 1: Establish Industry-Wide Data Standards

This includes alignment on:

  • Taxonomy and shared definitions
  • Financial and operational metrics
  • Licensing and workforce terminology
  • Data collection protocols

Goal 2: Build a Unified, Data-Supported Industry Narrative

This narrative will strengthen visibility, credibility, and economic influence by highlighting:

  • Career value and outcomes
  • Economic contribution
  • Long-term professional success
  • Safety and licensing rationale

PBA Executive Summit Industry Roundtable Group Photo

Next Steps: Creating an Industry Task Force

The roundtable marked the first time the industry assembled cross-functionally to identify what is missing, what is possible, and what work is required to build a stronger data future. Participants agreed that much of the expertise and insight already exists within the industry itself.

As a next step, a dedicated industry task force is being created to set priorities, develop a roadmap, and provide an ongoing mechanism to address the challenges and opportunities identified during the session.

How Technology Is Reshaping Beauty Education

January 19th, 2026

Kay Takeaways from the 2025 AACS Technology & Beauty Education Presentation Report

How beauty schools are using tech to strengthen connection, streamline operations, and lead cultural change.

At the 2025 American Association of Career Schools (AACS) Annual Convention, beauty school leaders, educators, suppliers, and technology partners joined Pivot Point for an interactive session on one big question:

How is technology reshaping beauty education—and how do we make sure it supports the people at the center of it?

Informed by insights from the Beauty Changes Lives (BCL) Industry Leader Technology Roundtable at Premiere Orlando, this report highlights the perspectives and priorities of the beauty school community—especially as schools navigate rapid change in technology, culture, and learner expectations.

At the heart of the discussion was a shared belief: Technology should be a true enabler—freeing up time, strengthening human connection, and accelerating the cultural and digital transformation already underway in schools nationwide.

Steve Reiss AACS Presentation

Key Themes from the AACS Interactive Discussion

1) Technology Should Enhance—Not Replace—the Human Experience

Attendees strongly affirmed that beauty is a human-centered profession. That means technology must be used to support what matters most:

  • A deeper connection between educators and students
  • More personalization and flexibility in learning
  • Greater space for creativity and artistry
  • More time for educators to focus on mentorship, coaching, and skill-building

In other words: tech should elevate the educator’s role—not diminish it.

2) A Cultural Shift Is Underway in Schools

Participants described schools as increasingly becoming innovation labs, as new tools become more accessible and widely adopted. Momentum is growing across multiple areas, including:

  • AI-powered instruction and support
  • Digital portfolios
  • Distance learning and hybrid models
  • Automated operational workflows

At the same time, attendees stressed an important point: Technology adoption must align with each school’s culture, values, and instructional philosophy.

It’s not about chasing every trend—it’s about choosing the right tools for the right purpose.

3) Leadership, Buy-In, and the “Why”

Successful transformation doesn’t happen by installing software. It happens when leaders do three things well:

  1. Model the behaviors they want others to adopt
  2. Clearly communicate the purpose behind new tools
  3. Celebrate early wins to build momentum and confidence

Participants emphasized that training and communication are essential—not optional—to reduce resistance, build comfort, and support long-term success.

4) Cross-Industry Collaboration and Shared Data

A recurring theme across the discussion was the need for shared frameworks and unified standards across:

  • Schools
  • Associations
  • Brands
  • Technology partners

Many attendees voiced concern about fragmentation and vendor overload, reinforcing the need for:

  • Consistent definitions
  • Shared data standards
  • Better coordination across stakeholders

The takeaway was clear: the industry moves faster—and smarter—when it moves together.

Technology in the Classroom

What the AACS Audience Shared (Survey Highlights)

Throughout the session, real-time survey feedback revealed how schools are currently approaching technology and what obstacles are getting in the way.

What’s happening now

  • Most schools are cautiously adopting technology, preferring tools that are proven and practical
  • Tech has most significantly transformed administrative operations, including:
    • Scheduling
    • Documentation
    • Data tracking

Barriers schools are facing

  • Cost continues to be a major concern
  • System integration is another top barrier (tools must work together)

AI adoption is already real

Nearly three-quarters of respondents reported they are testing, piloting, or already using AI tools, including platforms like ChatGPT.

Adoption requires more than access

Schools highlighted that the biggest success factors are often human, not technical:

  • Training and support
  • Ease of use
  • Emotional readiness and confidence

Students Experiencing Digital Online Learning

A Smarter Approach to Adoption: Framework & Guidelines

To support better decision-making, the report outlines a practical framework for adopting technology with intention and confidence.

Key principles include:

  • Backward engineering: start with the problem—not the tool
  • Cultural alignment with the school’s values and teaching philosophy
  • Considering ROI beyond cost savings (time, experience, outcomes, retention, brand value)
  • Scenario planning to anticipate change and future needs
  • Community-driven best practices, so schools can learn from each other instead of starting from scratch

The goal is simple: make technology decisions that are sustainable, strategic, and human-centered.

Daniel Dunworth AACS Presentation

Pivot Point at AACS

Pivot Point’s presence at AACS included multiple technology-focused presentations, including:

Unlocking the AI Advantage

A standing-room-only session led by Daniel Dunworth, this program delivered practical tools and real-world examples showing how:

  • Students can save time and increase creativity
  • Educators can build stronger lesson support and personalization
  • Administrators can streamline daily workflows using free AI tools

One of the most notable outcomes: Strong interest in follow-up training and school-specific sessions, highlighting growing demand for support in integrating AI into everyday operations and instruction.

Beauty as a Business Partner Spotlight

January 14th, 2026

Why Digital Marketing Skills Matter for Today’s Beauty Students and How Beauty as a Business Helps Them Thrive

Digital marketing skills are essential for beauty school students preparing for today’s industry. Given how clients find services, evaluate professionals, and make booking decisions, students must be able to promote themselves effectively online to succeed once they graduate. Learn why these skills matter, why Beauty as a Business created its curriculum, and how it supports learners, educators, and schools.

The Beauty Industry Is Evolving, and Students Need More Than Technical Skills

Beauty professionals today must master far more than technique. Success in the modern beauty industry depends on visibility, reputation, and the ability to attract and retain clients, many of whom now begin their search online.

Recognizing this shift, Beauty as a Business (BaaB) set out to close a significant gap in beauty education: the lack of formal training in digital marketing, personal branding, and online client acquisition. These skills are no longer optional. They’re essential components of career readiness.

Why Digital Marketing Skills Matter for Beauty Students

1. Clients discover beauty services online first

Most clients now research stylists, estheticians, barbers, and other professionals through Instagram, TikTok, Google, and online reviews. If students graduate without knowing how to manage these platforms effectively, they begin their careers at a disadvantage.

Beauty as a Business has developed its curriculum specifically to teach students how to present themselves professionally online—through content creation, photography, posting strategies, and optimized profiles—so they can be discovered by the right clients.

2. Marketing skills directly affect income potential

A full book of clients doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through consistent promotion, audience engagement, and brand presence. Professionals with digital marketing skills can:

  • Grow faster in new markets
  • Build loyal client relationships
  • Stabilize long-term income
  • Increase demand for their services

BaaB designed its lessons to give beauty learners the business skills that directly contribute to earning potential—not just after graduation, but even while they’re still in school.

Be Seen. Get Hired. Stay Relevant.

3. Personal branding sets students apart in a competitive industry

The beauty industry thrives on individuality. Personal brand development—one of the core focuses of Beauty as a Business—helps students define their style, specialty, and voice, enabling them to market themselves authentically and professionally.

BaaB’s curriculum guides learners through building a recognizable brand that resonates with their ideal client.

4. Digital marketing supports career longevity

Trends shift quickly. Social platforms evolve. Consumer behavior changes.
Professionals trained in digital marketing are better equipped to adapt and sustain their careers, no matter where the industry goes next.

BaaB created its curriculum with a long-term view: to equip students with durable skills that grow with them throughout their careers.

How Beauty as a Business Supports These Essential Skills

BaaB’s curriculum teaches the real-world marketing tools beauty professionals need, including:

  • Social media strategy for beauty professions
  • Photography and content creation
  • Google Business & online reviews
  • Website & portfolio fundamentals
  • Client communication and engagement
  • Practical, student-friendly lessons designed for visual learners

Beauty as a Business Partner Spotlight: Digital Marketing

Updated Instagram Course Now Available on LAB

To further enhance digital readiness, BaaB now offers an updated Instagram course on LAB. This refreshed content includes:

  • 13 new instructional videos
  • Interactive activities and quizzes
  • AI-powered content creation tools
  • Profile optimization techniques
  • Professional online etiquette
  • Advanced monetization strategies

Designed for cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, nails, and massage pathways, this course strengthens learners’ ability to turn social media into a professional asset—not just a pastime.

Why Schools Choose Beauty as a Business

Beauty schools integrate BaaB because it provides:

  • Turnkey content that fits seamlessly into existing programs
  • Industry-aligned skills that support placement and graduate success
  • Certificates that strengthen student portfolios
  • Consistent, high-quality business education without increasing instructor prep time

By teaching both technical mastery and essential digital skills, schools elevate the entire student experience.

Pivot Point Student Kits: Essentials for Success

January 12th, 2026

Why Schools Choose Pivot Point: The Ultimate Student Kit Experience

by Pivot Point Product Marketing Manager, Maranda Winchester

There’s a moment on the first day of beauty school that every student remembers—the moment they walk into the classroom and see a large box waiting for them. It’s filled with possibility, ambition, and the promise of a new future. This is what we refer to as Kitmas.

The room quiets. Excitement builds. And as students gather around their boxes—wide-eyed, nervous, ready—the anticipation shifts into something powerful. When that lid finally opens, it’s more than an unboxing. It’s a transformation. Tools shine under the classroom lights. Mannequins wait for their first cut or color. Brushes fan out like the start of an artist’s palette. Electrical tools hum with potential. And here’s what schools know: that moment matters.

This isn’t just an unboxing experience. It’s an opportunity to set the tone for your program, reinforce professionalism, and show students—visually and tangibly—that they’ve entered a serious, career-focused learning environment. At Pivot Point, we believe a well-equipped, thoughtfully curated beauty school student kit is a direct reflection of the quality of your school and the experience you promise your learners. The right kit doesn’t just support education—it elevates it.

Pivot Point Student Kits - Unboxing

What’s Inside a Pivot Point Student Kit?

Your Students’ Tools. Your Program’s Training. Their Career Transformation.

You understand the importance of day one. It’s the moment students decide whether they feel confident, supported, and ready for what’s ahead—and their kit plays a major role in that experience.

Pivot Point student kits are intentionally curated to:

  • Mirror the tools professionals use in salons, barbershops, spas, and nail salons
  • Support the competencies required by your curriculum
  • Prepare students for state-board expectations
  • Build daily habits rooted in professional skill-building
  • Reinforce your school’s reputation for quality

Whether your program specializes in Cosmetology, Barbering, Nails, or Esthetics, our kits are designed to integrate seamlessly into your training objectives and deliver long-term educational value.

We offer a variety of pre-built, ready-to-implement kit options—Starter, Novice, and Pro. However, the real advantage for schools is the ability to develop fully customized kits based on your program’s unique needs.

Pivot Point Student Kits - One Stop Shop

Why Pivot Point Student Kits Are Different

Schools partner with Pivot Point for one major reason: our kits make ordering easier and learning more effective. Each kit is thoughtfully curated to support the way students actually learn—with professional, industry-relevant tools organized for clarity, consistency, and hands-on success from the very first day.

Unlike pieced-together supply lists, Pivot Point Student Kits eliminate confusion for administrators and instructors, ensuring that every student starts with the same high-quality materials. This consistency helps educators focus on teaching, not troubleshooting supplies, and allows students to build skills with confidence using tools they’ll encounter in the real world. From streamlined ordering and reliable fulfillment to curriculum-aligned content, Pivot Point Student Kits are designed to reduce friction, save time, and elevate the classroom experience—so schools can spend less time managing materials and more time shaping future professionals.

Here’s what sets us apart.

Preparing for Your State Board Exam

December 24th, 2025

What to Expect and How ExamAce® Adapt Can Help You Prepare for Your Written State Board Exam

by Pivot Point Product Learning Experience Director, Nikki Parcells

Preparing for your state board exam can feel overwhelming. There’s a lot to study, different testing agencies, and real pressure to pass on the first try. Many learners aren’t sure where to begin—or how to know if they’re truly ready.

At Pivot Point, we recognize the importance of this step. Exam readiness is about more than memorizing facts—it’s about knowing what to expect, practicing with purpose, and building confidence through consistent preparation. That’s the goal of this guide: to help you understand the exam process and the tools that can support you on the way to licensure.

Teacher and Student Exam Prep

Understanding Your State Board Exam

Most state board exams include two components:

  • A theory (written) exam
  • A practical exam, which may be written or hands-on, depending on the state

Some states also offer a hair-focused license—often referred to as Hairstyling or Hair Design—which is similar to cosmetology but excludes skin and nail services.

Each state follows guidelines from a testing agency such as NIC or PSI, or administers its own exam. Candidate Information Bulletins (CIBs) outline the exam topics, categories, and competencies learners will be tested on.

Examination information is found in what is known as, for example, a Candidate Information Bulletin (CIBs), Testing Information Packet (TIPs), Candidate Handbook, or Examination Information Bulletin, which includes an outline of the exam topics, categories, and competencies learners will be tested on. These bulletins may also provide information about the testing site, scheduling and testing guidelines, scoring, and retaking an exam if needed.

Studying with resources aligned to these bulletins helps keep your preparation focused on what matters most — and avoids unnecessary stress.

State Board Test Prep

What to Expect at Your Testing Location

State board exams—whether self-administered or delivered through PSI test centers, NIC-aligned sites, school-based practical rooms, or other approved locations—are administered in secure, proctored environments. While procedures vary, most testing locations follow similar expectations:

  • Review your exam bulletin or examination packet/handbook: Your state board, professional licensing agency or testing provider will outline what is allowed, what to bring, and what to expect on test day.
  • Arrival time: Plan to arrive early to allow sufficient time for check-in and to settle in before your exam begins.
  • Personal items: Electronics, bags, notes, and other personal belongings are typically not allowed in the testing area. Some locations offer lockers, while others may require you to leave items in your car.
  • Check-in procedures: Expect to verify your identity with a valid, government-issued photo ID. Some states may require additional documents, so review your exam bulletin ahead of time.
  • Secure environment: Exams are monitored to support a fair and consistent testing experience.
  • Standardized testing rules: Test administrators will provide instructions before your exam begins. Communication between candidates isn’t permitted, and proctors cannot interpret or explain exam questions.

Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help reduce anxiety and enable you to focus on performing at your best.

Introducing ExamAce Adapt by Pivot Point

Introducing the ExamAce® Adapt Path: A Smarter Way to Prepare

ExamAce Adapt is included with all LAB learner and educator seats and is available for:

It’s designed to help learners study efficiently, build confidence, and feel prepared for test day.

1. Start with a Realistic Mock Exam

Begin with a 100-question mock exam that mirrors the structure of NIC, PSI, or other state-aligned testing content. This baseline assessment reveals what you already know and identifies areas that require further attention. Unlimited attempts allow you to revisit it at any time as you progress.

2. Review a Clear Score Report

After the mock exam, ExamAce Adapt breaks down your performance by category. These insights remove the guesswork and help you focus on the topics that matter most for your exam.

3. Practice Smarter with Adaptive Quizzes

Adaptive, 30-question quizzes adjust to your strengths and weaknesses. You’ll see rationales for every answer, helping you understand the “why” behind each concept and reinforcing learning as you go.

4. Track Your Progress

Visual dashboards make it easy to see growth over time. You can review category strengths, identify trends, and feel more prepared with each practice session.

ExamAce Adapt questions are not actual state board exam questions, but they are aligned to NIC, PSI, TDLR, and other state board Candidate Information Bulletins for accurate and meaningful practice.

For the most up-to-date NIC and PSI Candidate Information Bulletins (CIBs), as well as other state board testing agencies, learners should visit their state board or professional licensing website or the testing agency directly.

Students Studying Together

Smart Study Strategies

A few simple habits can make exam prep feel more manageable:

  • Limit distractions. A quiet, organized study space helps you stay focused.
  • Study consistently. Avoid cramming. It tends to rely on short-term memory, which doesn’t always hold up under test pressure. Short, steady study sessions are more effective.
  • Use active learning. Rewrite key points, explain concepts aloud, or create concise summaries to reinforce understanding.
  • Practice with purpose. Tools like ExamAce Adapt help you become familiar with exam-style questions and focus on areas that need more review.
  • Take breaks. Periodic pauses support better memory and concentration.
  • Prepare physically. Rest well, eat a meal beforehand, and allow yourself plenty of time to arrive on test day.

Test-Taking Tips

Before the Test

These strategies help you reduce test anxiety prior to your exam and often lead to improved test performance:

  • Familiarize yourself with the course topics and review them regularly.
  • Create study aids and resources such as notes and outlines.
  • Make time to practice test-taking skills. Learn strategies for various test formats, including multiple-choice.
  • Focus on formats commonly used in licensure exams, and develop effective time management skills during tests.
  • Master and explain key concepts relevant to the licensure exam material.
  • Form study groups to pool resources and generate motivation.

On Test Day

These strategies can help you stay calm and focused during your exam to achieve higher test scores:

  • Arrive early and ensure you have all the necessary materials.
  • Listen carefully, follow the proctor’s instructions and read and adhere to the instructions for each section of the test.
  • Complete all required administrative details, such as your name, date and school.
  • Stay focused on the current question and do not stress about the overall performance on the test.
  • Read each question carefully. Look for keywords or clues that guide you toward the best answer.
  • Eliminate wrong answers immediately. This improves your chances of selecting the correct answer.
  • Manage your time. If a question feels challenging, choose the best option and move on. You can revisit it if time allows.
  • Use the timer wisely. Many digital exams include an on-screen clock—check it periodically without letting it distract you.
  • Review your work. If you finish early, look over your answers or return to skipped questions if your exam system allows it.
  • Follow all testing rules. This ensures a fair environment and helps keep you focused on doing your best.
  • Research suggests not to change an answer unless you are completely sure of the correct response.

Pivot Point Exam Prep

Why Answer Choices Are Ordered Shortest-to-Longest

You may notice that answer choices in ExamAce Adapt appear from shortest to longest. This follows common testing design practices used in many licensure exams, helping to create a fair and consistent experience. Ordering choices by length:

  • Improves readability
  • Reduces visual distractions
  • Helps avoid unintentionally drawing attention to longer or shorter responses

This helps learners prepare in a format similar to what they may see on test day.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a state board exam takes time, focus, and the right tools. With clear practice, helpful feedback, and a thoughtful study approach, learners can build the confidence they need to succeed.

ExamAce Adapt supports this process by providing realistic practice, personalized quizzes, reliable alignment with exam content, and insights that help learners and educators track progress along the way.

Prosper U Partner Spotlight

December 08th, 2025

Discover how KPIs can enhance your beauty school clinic floor by increasing revenue, retention, and student engagement.

Why Beauty Schools Need KPIs to Drive Clinic Floor Growth

Beauty schools thrive when their clinic floors are running at their highest potential—where client retention is strong, students are confident and engaged, and revenue flows consistently. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by adopting data-driven Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

When used correctly, KPIs provide beauty schools with a clear roadmap for increasing revenue, enhancing student engagement, and improving client outcomes.

This is why Pivot Point and Prosper U are hosting an exclusive webinar designed to help schools understand exactly which KPIs matter most and how to use them effectively.

You’ll also hear insights from Eric Fisher, who will share how Prosper U’s Live LAB at the Eric Fisher Academy uses KPIs to create confident, high-performing student teams and real revenue growth.

What Are KPIs in a Beauty School Clinic Floor Environment?

In the context of cosmetology, esthetics, nails, and barbering programs, KPIs help schools measure and manage the most important drivers of clinic floor success. Common KPIs include:

  • Client count
  • Average ticket
  • Rebooking percentage
  • Retail per client

These aren’t just numbers—they create daily focus and long-term growth.

Student Salon Consultation

The Top Benefits of Using KPIs in Your Clinic Floor

1. Increased Cash Flow

Tracking daily performance helps leadership guide students toward key objectives, thereby improving service revenue, retail sales, and rebooking rates.

2. Higher Client Count & Average Ticket

Simple, repeatable systems allow students to grow their books—leading to more services, higher ticket totals, and stronger overall profitability.

3. Better Client & Student Retention

Consistent communication, goal sharing, and clear expectations keep both clients and students coming back.

4. Stronger Student and Educator Engagement

When performance is visible, motivating, and tied to real earning potential, students feel more empowered, and educators feel more supported.

Fundamentals: Nails – Unlock Your Nail Art Potential

December 04th, 2025

Small Canvas, Big Creativity — Why Pivot Point’s Fundamentals: Nails Absolutely Slays

by Pivot Point Product Learning Experience Specialist, Buddy Sims

If you’ve ever scrolled through social media, gasped at a set of nails so gorgeous they deserved their own Vogue cover, and wondered, “How do they DO that?” — you’re in the right place. Pivot Point’s Fundamentals: Nails program is your VIP pass behind the scenes to unlock your nail art potential. But don’t be blinded by the sparkles and sculpting gel; the real secret to success is education, intention, and dedication to the craft.

Suppose you want to become a social media nail superstar (or even just look like one). In that case, you’ve got to understand the “why” behind the “wow”: color theory, design principles, balance, composition, and the artistic foundations used by everyone from Monet to Marvel—yes, fundamental art theory, adapted for tiny, living canvases.

Before new nail pros pick up a dotting tool or educators unleash a lesson as shiny as chrome, Pivot Point delivers a toolbox of resources as robust as my nail art collection. And trust me… I have a lot of nail art supplies.

Fundamentals: Nails - Nail School Students

Fundamentals: Nails Sets Learners Up for Success

With interactive e-books, videos, activities, performance guides, skill builders, and service workshops, our learner-centered approach keeps both new students and seasoned educators feeling like the main character in their own nail-art adventure. Pivot Point doesn’t just hand you a brush and wish you luck — we hand you an entire artistic arsenal.

And it’s not just about nail art. The Natural Nails and Nail Enhancements Areas of Study create strong foundational knowledge and service skills — as strong as the crystals embellishing those Instagram-worthy sets.

So buckle up, beauty buffs. Let’s sashay through the eleven lessons in our Nail Art Area of Study and uncover why each one is your ticket to the fabulous world of professional nail artistry.

Fundamentals: Nails - Nail Art Theory

Nail Art Theory – “Every masterpiece begins with a map.”

This lesson is the heartbeat of the entire Nail Art Area of Study.

Learners dive into:

  • Color theory
  • Design elements and principles
  • Texture
  • Placement
  • Visual flow
  • Emphasis and balance

These concepts transform a simple set of nails into a micro-gallery of intentional design. Suddenly, each fingertip becomes a curated artistic moment.

Educators love this lesson because it gives them the vocabulary and visual frameworks they need to help learners break down complex designs into simple, actionable steps. Creativity becomes not just instinctual, but intellectual.

Fundamentals Nails - Nail Art Products and Tools

Nail Art Products, Tools, Supplies & Equipment – “The right tools turn talent into triumph.”

Learners step behind the curtain and meet the star performers of nail artistry: dotting tools, striping brushes, sculpting gels, foils, pigments, chrome powders, charms — the list goes on. (Too long to list here. Phew!)

This lesson goes way beyond show-and-tell.

Learners discover how to:

  • Choose the right tools and products
  • Understand compatibility
  • Prevent common layering issues
  • Care for their equipment
  • Recognize high-quality pro materials

Pivot Point ensures learners know what to look for when shopping or trying something new. Educators can also demonstrate their favorite techniques and explain how professional products support both creativity and client health.

Fundamentals Nails: Nail Art Guest Experience

Nail Art Guest Experience – “A great service is part art, part heart.”

Stunning nails are only half the story. The other half? The human experience.

This lesson empowers learners to:

  • Consult confidently
  • Decode vague inspiration photos
  • Manage expectations
  • Communicate clearly
  • Build trust
  • Elevate the guest experience

It also includes inspiration prompts and theme boards — and yes, the visuals in Fundamentals: Nails are absolutely gorgeous. Educators love this section because it teaches real-world client communication, transforming technicians into trusted professionals.

Fundamentals Nails - Nail Art Manicure Skills

Nail Art Skills – “Skill is the silent partner behind every stunning design.”

This is where learners practice the procedures and techniques behind today’s most popular nail designs.

Skills include:

  • Freehand painting
  • Sculpting
  • Inlay work
  • Embellishment application
  • Detail work
  • Mixing, layering, and finishing techniques

These lessons introduce the endless possibilities of nail art in a highly visual, inspiring way. They’re the fast lane on your nail-art success track.

Before reaching the full-service workshop finale, learners complete six skills workshops, each containing multiple techniques that bring theory to life. Think of it as having all your favorite TikTok tutorials — but without the misinformation or bad habits.

Educators get to witness real growth: shaky strokes becoming deliberate details, messy attempts transforming into polished designs, and learners stepping into their artistic confidence.

Fundamentals Nails - Full-Service Nail Art Workshop

The Grand Finale: The Full-Service Nail Art Workshop

This is where everything comes together.

Learners master how to:

  • Consult and sketch
  • Customize designs
  • Manage timing
  • Build trust
  • Execute designs from start to finish
  • Deliver a camera-ready final set

It’s the perfect fusion of technique, theory, creativity, and client care — giving learners the confidence to step behind the station like seasoned pros.

Fundamentals Nails - Nail School Students and Educator

Pivot Point Doesn’t Just Teach Nail Art — We Teach Artists How to Nail the Art

“Good art is intentional; great service is unforgettable.”

Pivot Point’s Nail Art Lessons aren’t just a list of techniques — they’re a beautifully curated artistic journey. Learners develop mastery rooted in theory, helping them understand the why behind the wow.

Our curriculum develops prepared, perceptive, and deeply creative professionals who understand that nail art is both a craft and a cultural expression.

I only wish this existed when I was in school — and I know the other subject matter experts who contributed feel the same. We built this entire Area of Study for you, my nail fam. You deserve an education as creative and brilliant as the designs you dream of. Are you ready to unlock your nail art potential with Fundamentals: Nails?

Fundamentals: Nails – The Mani-festo of Nail Education

October 27th, 2025

From Base Coat to Big Goals, Fundamentals Nails is the Top Coat of Nail Education.

by Pivot Point Product Learning Experience Specialist, Buddy Sims

I had the pleasure of helping create Pivot Point’s Fundamentals: Nails, and I even got to glam it up on camera! That’s right, I’m featured in the videos and helped write the content, which was developed alongside some of the biggest names and brightest minds in the nail world (we’re talking true industry icons and nail superstars). I’ll always consider that the pinnacle of my career, which is part of why I’m always so excited to share our stellar nails program!

As Pivot Point’s Subject Matter Expert for Nails, a licensed instructor, a board member, and test writer, I brought all of that experience to the table (after disinfecting the table, of course – safety first!). And that’s just my contributions! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the many others who contributed to Fundamentals: Nails. We did the dang thing! We made sure this program sets up learners and educators for success. We’ve seen behind the curtain of licensure and used that insight to help design a program that not only meets requirements but raises the standard for what nail education should look like.

Fundamentals: Nails Science & Sanitation

The Science Beneath the Shine

They say beauty is an art, but in nail technology, it’s also a science… with plenty of glitter to keep things interesting.

At its core, Fundamentals: Nails is all about industry science and safety. We’re not just painting pretty pictures; we’re protecting clients, creating beautiful results, and mastering the technical foundations that make nail pros truly stand out. If we don’t know the science behind what we’re doing, that gorgeous nail art won’t last. Every area of study is grounded in what’s real, what’s relevant, and what keeps clients coming back with all ten fingers and toes. With all the education out there (good and bad), you can count on Fundamentals: Nails to be your single source of truth. Doubt and misinformation be gone!

Nails Education Classroom Learning

Stream-Worthy Learning, Salon-Ready Skills

Think of it as the Netflix of nail education! Marathon-worthy visuals, hands-on workshops, and enough activities to keep your brushes busy and your brain buzzing.

Let’s be honest, this program isn’t just smart. It’s stunning. We packed it with gorgeous visuals, skills workshops, and full-service workshops to help learners master every intricate detail before combining them into full services. Wait until you see our sculpted pink and whites; even a novice can achieve this. No more black and white pages full of endless text. Fundamentals: Nails is brimming with exciting resources and activities that bring new meaning and a deeper understanding of the professional nail industry. Learners will be ready to make their dreams come true. And we’ve made the experience for the educator just as fun!

Nails Education Teaching Support

Teaching That’s Polished to Perfection

You’re going to nail teaching with resources so good you’ll feel like you have a personal assistant.

The instructional design of Fundamentals: Nails is also rooted in science. Fundamentals: Mindful Teaching is incorporated throughout the program. Featuring Pivot Point’s mission and commitment to providing resources that maximize learner engagement and enhance the educator experience, as well as curriculum support. And as always, instructors have an entire support team (and me!) here at Pivot Point to answer all your nail-related questions.

Fundaments: Nail Art

The Art (and Heart) of Nail Design

Dive deep into the why and how of nail art. So you can create masterpieces that are as smart as they are sparkly!

There’s even an entire area of study dedicated to Nail Art. You heard right, and with this program at your fingertips, you’ll have even more to brag about! Lesson after lesson of just the fun stuff. It also highlights the intricacies and caveats of various nail products and brands on the market. Learn the basics and beyond some of the most popular nail art techniques. Then mix and match to create your own unique and intricate designs. Think of it as your backstage pass to the creativity that drew us all to this industry in the first place.

Whether you’re a learner or an educator, this program is bursting with resources and hands-on activities to make learning come alive. Plus, it’s designed to support success long after the final exam. We didn’t just build a curriculum; we created a full-blown nail education experience. One that’s modern, artistic, and (if I do say so myself) fabulous.

So grab your brushes, prep your stations, and get ready to polish up your future. With Fundamentals: Nails, you’re not just learning to pass a test. You’re learning to become the nail pro the industry’s been waiting for.
