Coming Full Circle: A Journey Shaped by Passion, Purpose, and Pivot Point

The Start of a Career in the Professional Beauty Industry

In 1987, I began a journey that would ultimately shape not just my career—but my identity. Like many entering the professional beauty industry, I started with a dream, a curiosity, and a willingness to learn. I enrolled in cosmetology school in Omaha, where I would go on to earn not only my cosmetology license, but also my instructor’s license and esthetics license under the mentorship of industry icon Lyal McCaig.

Lyal saw something in me early on. More importantly, he challenged me to think bigger. Upon completing my education, he encouraged me to apply to Pivot Point World Headquarters in Chicago. That encouragement changed the trajectory of my life.

Becoming “Pivotized” at Pivot Point

In 1990, I was hired by Pivot Point and immersed myself in their renowned teacher training program—becoming what we proudly call “Pivotized.” That experience was transformational. For the first time, everything I had been doing behind the chair made complete sense. I no longer just knew how to do hair—I understood why. That shift elevated my technical skills and gave me the confidence to compete and win in hairdressing competitions, but more importantly, it gave me purpose.

I discovered a deep passion for teaching. Sharing knowledge, inspiring others, and helping students connect the dots the way I had—it was incredibly fulfilling. Surrounded by talented educators from all over the world, I grew not only as a professional but also as a person.

Finding Purpose Through Beauty Education

After four incredible years with Pivot Point, my journey expanded. I stepped into new roles that pushed me beyond my comfort zone—Director of Education for an international school and product company, where I gained invaluable experience in marketing and leadership. That path led me to roles such as Executive Director, National Education Manager for the largest beauty retailer in the U.S., Sales Director for multiple professional beauty brands, and eventually VP of Sales and Operations for a large franchise salon organization.

This industry took me places I never imagined—across the country and around the world. It introduced me to some of the most talented, passionate, and genuine individuals I’ve ever known. Many of those relationships remain strong to this day, and they are among the most meaningful parts of my journey.

Lessons Learned from Pivot Point Founder Leo Passage

One of the greatest privileges of my career was working alongside Leo Passage, founder of Pivot Point. Watching his vision come to life—especially in product development—was nothing short of inspiring. I carried those lessons with me and later applied them in developing a hair care line of my own. His influence extended far beyond technique; it was about innovation, excellence, and purpose.

Through it all, the foundation built at Pivot Point remained with me. The presentation skills, the discipline, the structured thinking—it shaped how I approached every opportunity that followed.

Returning to Pivot Point as Sales Development Manager

Now, in 2025, I’ve come full circle—returning to Pivot Point as a Sales Development Manager. It’s hard to put into words what that means to me. Pivot Point is the company that launched my career, believed in me, and gave me the tools to succeed. To come back, bringing decades of experience with me, feels both humbling and incredibly rewarding.

More Than a Career in Beauty

I am deeply grateful to the Passage family for what they have done for me—personally and professionally. They didn’t just provide an opportunity; they opened a door to a life I didn’t even know was possible. I started as a kid from a small city with big dreams I couldn’t yet define. The professional beauty industry gave me those dreams—and then gave me the chance to live them.

This isn’t just a career. It’s who I am. And I wouldn’t change a single thing.
