Nail enhancements are one of the biggest and most profitable sectors of the professional nail world. Think about what it takes to build a powerhouse like that—not just the people who made it happen, but all the knowledge behind their work, too. The information about nail science and product safety alone could fill entire libraries.

I know, I know…science isn’t exactly what most of us are here for. And it’s probably not what first brings most learners to the profession, either. What catches their attention is more likely a near-fantasy set of nail enhancements worn by a pop-culture icon or scrolling past them on social media. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I love it!

I want to peek into the nail fantasies of future and current nail pros and see their living art everywhere I go. But I also want the professionals creating those looks—and the clients wearing them—to have safe, successful experiences that last well beyond the latest set posted on socials.

Long-time nail professionals know just how multifaceted nail enhancements can be. They also know that gaps in foundational knowledge can lead to problems well beyond those caused by an improperly applied enhancement. This is big stuff.

I’d also be remiss not to mention our high-quality workshop videos featuring industry icons. But beautiful visuals aren’t there just to make the program look good. Some of my favorite visuals are actually found in—you guessed it—theory. Take gel and gravity, for example.

The self-leveling properties of gel are highly dependent on gravity, so precise finger positioning is essential for a controlled application. Instead of simply telling learners that, Fundamentals: Nails uses imagery to help them see what’s happening.

The title says it all. How do we get from point A to point Z as efficiently as possible?

Nail professionals and educators have to navigate concerns around product overexposure, allergies, nail damage, service breakdown, respiratory exposure and an unpredictable amount of misinformation. Combine a boom in product manufacturing with gaps in appropriate education, and our work educating nail professionals and consumers becomes even more important.

The best way for nail pros to counter misinformation? Follow the science.

Fundamentals: Nails makes complex nail science easier to understand and, more importantly, connects that science to decisions learners and professionals actually make. One of the most important lessons is also one of the simplest: use complete manufacturer systems and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Nail enhancement products are formulated as systems. Substituting components, using products outside the manufacturer’s instructions, or working with improper ratios can affect product performance and proper curing, increasing the risk of overexposure.

The same principle matters when we talk about UV-curing lamps. Rather than assuming a lamp will properly cure any UV-cured nail product, professionals need to follow the product manufacturer’s specifications for the system being used.

Full stop.

Even the language we use to teach these concepts matters. Doug has discussed the potential confusion around the word compatibility, and I agree—especially when we’re talking about nail enhancements. If we teach learners to focus only on whether products seem “compatible,” we risk losing the bigger lesson: work within the complete system and follow the manufacturer’s directions.

That can all sound a little restrictive, but that’s not how I see it at all.

In fact, I think the opposite is true. The more you understand the science of nails, the more freedom you have to create.
