Beauty As A Career in 2026

September 03rd, 2026

Insights From Career Counselors

Recent developments, including concerns about college debt, the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on traditional white-collar careers, and questions about the value of a college education, have reshaped the conversation about choosing between college and a career.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Pivot Point Research Team and Beauty Cast Network (BCN) conducted research at the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Annual Conference. The goal was to establish a strong benchmark for how perception of vocational education—and beauty careers specifically—is evolving over time.

The research highlights their strong interest in beauty careers (hairdressing, barbering, nails, skincare, and massage) as viable and rewarding alternatives to traditional college degrees. It also underscores their need for more information about beauty industry programs to guide their students effectively.

This research can help inform policymakers about the value of beauty as a career and provide affirmation that these careers should be recognized as first-choice options.

Four-Year Benchmark Study Finds Career Education on Par with Traditional College

Research by Pivot Point International and Beauty Cast Network finds that career counselors view beauty and vocational pathways as equally credible postsecondary options.

Four years of research from Pivot Point International and Beauty Cast Network show that career counselors view career education as being on par with traditional college, and that beauty education is benefiting from that shift. The Beauty as a Career 2026 report is the fourth consecutive year of benchmarking counselor attitudes at the American School Counselor Association Annual Conference.

Career Education Continues to Gain Ground

The 2026 findings show that a growing share of counselors see little difference between vocational and college pathways in job security, earning potential, and career satisfaction. Among counselors who did perceive a difference, vocational education held the advantage.

The findings point to a continued evolution in how postsecondary success is defined. Rather than viewing a four-year degree as the default path to a successful career, counselors are increasingly recognizing career education as a credible pathway that can offer students strong employment prospects, earning potential, and long-term satisfaction.

Beauty Education is Part of the Shift

Beauty education is also viewed positively within this broader trend. In 2026, 66% of counselors said beauty education is trending upward relative to traditional college.

That momentum reflects a broader recognition that beauty, barbering, and wellness can offer students practical, skills-based pathways into meaningful careers. As perceptions of career education continue to evolve, beauty education has an opportunity to reach students seeking alternatives to a traditional four-year college experience.

“Over the past four years, we’ve seen a clear shift in how counselors think about postsecondary pathways,” said Pivot Point’s Robert Passage. “And beauty, barbering, and wellness are part of that change.”

Growing Acceptance—and an Opportunity to Educate

At the same time, the research shows there is still more work to do. Only about one-third of counselors described themselves as extremely or very familiar with beauty career pathways. Counselors continue to want better information about beauty school programs, licensing, employment opportunities, earning potential, and financial aid.

The report also highlights an important insight for the industry: counselors tend to focus first on employability—whether students can gain marketable skills, secure stable work, and build a sustainable career—before viewing entrepreneurship as a longer-term opportunity.

“The opportunity for our industry is to support this growing acceptance with clearer, more credible career information,” said Beauty Cast Network’s Penny Burns. “When counselors understand the education options, career paths and long-term potential, they become much more confident recommending beauty careers.”
