Insights From Career Counselors
Questions about student debt, the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on traditional white-collar jobs, the return on investment for a college degree and a focus on career satisfaction have fueled the “career vs. college” conversation.
In 2023, 2024, and again in 2025, the Pivot Point Research Team and Beauty Cast Network (BCN) conducted research at the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Annual Conference. The aim was to understand their interest in promoting vocational education versus traditional college pathways and determine the information and resources that were needed to best promote careers in beauty.
The research highlights their strong interest in beauty careers (hairdressing, barbering, nails, skincare, and massage) as viable and rewarding alternatives to traditional college degrees. It also underscores their need for more information about beauty industry programs to guide their students effectively.
This research can help inform policymakers about the value of beauty as a career and provides affirmation that these careers should be recognized as first-choice options.
