Intercoiffure and Pivot Point Launch 2025 Student Contest Celebrating Special Occasion Hair

Intercoiffure, the prestigious global network of top-tier salons, has officially opened entries for its 2025 Student Contest—an annual competition that shines a spotlight on creativity, education, and social responsibility in the beauty industry. This year’s theme: Special Occasion Hair.

Presented in partnership with Pivot Point, a leader in beauty education, the contest invites students from accredited public and private beauty schools to showcase their passion and artistry for formal event hairstyling. New to this year’s program, Beyond the Ponytail will join the judging panel. They bring an influential voice in styling inspiration to the evaluation process.

To enter, students must submit a mobile-shot video (30 seconds or less) by June 16, answering the prompt:

“What makes special occasion hair exciting to you?”

Finalists will then team up with a chosen instructor to bring their vision to life. All contestants will be using Pivot Point’s PREMIUM SERIES mannequins.

The winning student and their instructor will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City, where they will be honored on stage at the Intercoiffure Fall Atelier, held September 28–29.

This contest not only highlights technical skill but also celebrates mentorship, artistry, and the transformative power of education.

For over 20 years, I’ve been using the fantastic mannequin technology formerly known as Snap Cap. Now, under its new name, the Cap Series, this amazing invention has helped my students master their Cosmetology and Barbering skills while also solving the age-old problem of locker and car storage.

Before the Cap Series, it wasn’t uncommon to see my students running back and forth all day, dragging mannequins in and out of their cars—trunks, back seats, you name it. There was simply no room for all those mannequins in their lockers or stations. But once we discovered Snap Cap (now Cap Series), everything changed. Instead of needing ten separate mannequins, my students now only need one headform with ten different caps. And guess what? They can all fit into a large backpack! From a full trunk to a backpack—what a relief!

Over the years, my excitement for this product has only grown. I’m obsessed with how versatile it is! With the Cap Series, I can swap out caps—blonde, dark, straight, curly—onto any headform, whether light, medium, or dark. The beauty, barbering, and wellness industries are experiencing a growing generational divide, with beauty schools at the center of this challenge. Differences in teaching approaches, communication styles, and the use of technology are creating obstacles for administrators, instructors, and students alike.

In 2024, Pivot Point International released the white paper Insights and Strategies to Address Our Industry’s Generational Divide, based on the Beauty Changes Lives Industry Leader Roundtable. Now, Pivot Point is taking a deeper dive into how this divide specifically affects beauty schools with its latest report, Bridging Generations in Beauty Education. Based on conversations with administrators and instructors from private schools, school chains, and public institutions, this white paper highlights real-world perspectives on generational differences—many of which present ongoing challenges in the classroom.

Key Challenges: Communication, Technology, and Expectations

One of the most significant issues is communication between generations. Older instructors, accustomed to traditional teaching methods, often struggle to engage students who prefer hands-on, interactive learning. In contrast, younger instructors may focus on building friendships with students, sometimes at the expense of maintaining classroom authority.

Technology presents another major challenge. Younger students, as digital natives, expect technology to be seamlessly integrated into their education. However, many older instructors are less comfortable with digital tools. “Instructors and students speak different languages,” the report states. “It’s changed in the past 15 years, but even more so in recent post-pandemic years.”

Additionally, shifting student expectations are reshaping the learning experience. Influenced by social media, many students anticipate instant success and struggle with patience and professionalism. Administrators report that today’s students are often less financially accountable for their education, leading to lower attendance and engagement. “Students expect big results without putting in the work,” an instructor observed.

Finding Solutions

Despite these challenges, beauty schools are identifying ways to bridge the generational divide. The research highlights several key strategies, including:

Pairing younger instructors with experienced mentors to provide guidance and balance professionalism with reliability.
Integrating social media into lessons to help students develop realistic expectations.
Encouraging instructors to embrace digital tools and blend traditional and modern teaching techniques.
Shifting classroom dynamics by having students explain the “why” behind techniques rather than simply memorizing steps.
Fostering a culture of mutual respect, where educators adapt to student perspectives while maintaining authority.
